How safe would it be to walk around in San Pedro until around 9pm and back to our hotel Ocean Tides? Mom and 2 teen daughters You will be fine. I'm very rarely in that part of town after dark, so, I'll leave it to others to say whether to walk on the beach or the street. Depending on where you are walking from, you should be just fine. When you are on the beach, keep aware and you'll be fine. There's three of you and so safety in numbers. I walk around a lot by myself. Not like i used to years ago but even so you'll be fine before 9 pm and probably even until midnight as long as you are together and going no further than from central park to your hotel.
However, i agree with the poster above--years ago we would walk at night with no worries. However, that has since changed a bit. Just stay away from the park main park in the center of town on the beach and the beach after pm and you will have nothign to worry about. You'll be safe and you'll have an adventure. With two teen daughters, you may also receive some male attention.
Be friendly and sensible and you should have no problems. All the above advice is good advice. I have a similar concern, but I am staying about three miles south of town. Or if we go out at night, should we plan to take cabs instead? I have friends who live several miles south of town. As far as I know, they've never had any issues.
Although I doubt they're out after midnight much. It's very, very dark on the road at night. Once you're out of town, very few, if any, street lights.
I've been having that same question. I'm considering taking a small hand knife for protection since I'll be on the cayes by myself for the most part, but I've looked up the laws on "blades" in belize and and from what I've read they are pretty strict on what and why you can carry one, even though I've read people carry around machetes all the time? You do not need a knife. Commons sense if all that is required.
